I am currently running Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro. I do not appear to have a problem with Word 2004. Anyone have an idea on what needs to be done to get files that Adobe believes in. The problem appears to be connected with font embedding. I am using Adobe Opentype fonts.

Sounds like you are running into the problem introduced by the 10.6.7
update. The problem is the fonts. The problem is well-known, but I can't
recall a solution at this point, apart from downgrading to 10.6.6 or
using different fonts.
