Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University

LANGUAGE TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST

The Five Colleges of Ohio Consortium, Inc., supported by a grant from the
Mellon Foundation, seeks qualified candidates for the position of Language
Technology Specialist for the Ohio Five Foreign Language Project. This
position was created to provide training for diverse foreign language
departments on five campuses in a broad range of instructional technologies.

The Language Technology Specialist will work under the direction of a
Steering Committee to guide and support the Ohio Five Foreign language
faculty as they combine foreign language pedagogy and the use of technology
to teach foreign language, literature, and culture. This position requires
an energetic, highly motivated individual with excellent organizational,
analytical, as well as outstanding communication and "people" skills.
Success of the project depends on the candidate's ability to interact
creatively and collaboratively with faculty members with varying levels of
expertise in educational technology.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated a commitment to the
teaching of language and culture, have a proven interest in pedagogy and
current teaching methodologies, and will also be familiar with emerging
instructional technology on both Mac and DOS/Windows platforms. Expertise
in low to high level authoring systems (e.g. Macromedia's Authorware and
Director programs, X-Media Engine Templates, Libra or SuperMacLang) as well
as a good grasp on web-development (HTML, Javascript, knowledge of common
editors like PageMill, Netscape Composer, Dreamweaver or Claris Home Page)
is expected. The candidate will hold at least a Bachelor's degree (but
Master's is preferred).

Specific duties include:

1. Conducting both short training sessions and longer workshops in the
use of multimedia technology and the development of pedagogical
applications of this technology.
2. Fostering an on-going exchange of views among language faculty at the
five institutions about teaching methods, instructional materials and
shared pedagogical problems and strategies.
3. Helping Ohio 5 language faculty explore cross-platform and
internet-based solutions to language pedagogy in order to foster more
collaborative work.
4. Helping Ohio 5 language faculty identify, select, purchase and install
hardware and software, and assisting faculty in evaluating other externally
developed material (commercial and non-commercial) for use in their
programs.
5. Helping Ohio 5 Colleges explore how interactive technologies can be
used in language instruction for less commonly taught languages on the five
campuses.

The position of Language Technology Specialist is available immediately.
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Employment
will be on an annual basis, with possible renewal for a second year.
Scheduled travel to each of the Five Colleges on a regular basis is
required. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. An excellent
benefits package including health insurance, vacation, and sick leave, as
well as opportunities to attend workshops, seminars, and conferences will
be provided.

To be assured of full consideration, candidates should send the following
materials ASAP:
letter of application elaborating one's qualifications for the position
and most recent project using instructional technologies,
        curriculum vitae, and
        three letters of reference.

All materials should be sent to Nelson de Jesus, Ohio5 Foreign Language
Project Director, Department of Romance Languages, Oberlin College, Oberlin
OH 44074 or by e-mail to [log in to unmask]
