Here is the answer to this question (regarding use of the ODBC driver for FileMaker ESS):

1. if using FileMaker client and not FileMaker server, I need to install the driver on EACH client machine; if need for 5 different clients, I need to purchase the up to 5 connections driver and install it on each machine.

2. if using FIleMaker server I need to only install the driver Server Edition - for FileMaker Server and web servers on the FIleMaker Server machine

3. if I want to be able to see my SQL database via FileMaker ESS from my iPad FileMaker Go - I need to have the driver installed on FileMaker server

FM looks for the driver and DSN on the machine where the FM database is hosted. When the FM database is hosted on FM Server, FM Server will make connections to the SQL database on behalf of the connected FMP or Go clients.

PointInSpace.com allows ESS connections to locally hosted MySQL databases on their shared hosting accounts. If you need to connect to a 3rd party datasource, then you would need a virtual dedicated server to do so.
