Abstract:
 When we overuse common resources, humans jeopardize other species in life's
fabric and potentially our own future.  Since 1990, serious energy has gone
into persuading individuals to alleviate the tragedy of the commons, such as
overfishing, water shortages, and anthropogenic climate change, by
voluntarily altering consumption.  These market-based consumer campaigns
appeal to guilt - an individual's willingness to do the right thing.  With
environmental guilt and eco-consumption on the rise, what kind of progress
are we seeing toward sustainability?  I then turn to the role of a more
social emotion, shame, in solving social dilemmas and present results from a
recent public goods experiment that tests the effects of shame and honor on
cooperation.  I will explore shame in the context of evolutionary biology,
political philosophy, real world applications, and in light of digital
technology, which increasingly allows us to keep track of one another.

Breakdown of expenses - How will the money be spent?
Environmental benefits - Why is this an effective use of funds? How does it
improve sustainable practices in the DOC or at Dartmouth?

Applications do not have to be very long, but your idea should be clearly
planned out. If you have any questions or would like to be more involved in the
environmental studies division of the DOC, blitz ESD.

Join us as we explore the phenomenon of Global Dimming, a global cooling effect attributed to increases in cloud reflectivity driven by atmospheric emissions. We will inform our discussion by showing sections of the PBS Documentary Global Dimming and other selected footage.
