Class description:
"The Sensory Language of the Hand: Hand Building and Glazing with Earthenware" with Holly Walker:
Working with red earthenware clay, explore a variety of techniques for hand-building and glazing ceramic work. This class will build works from pinched coils, creating texture intrinsic to the process rather than applied to the surface; and from slabs, which offer a clean, spare aesthetic. A variety of hand-built forms will be taught, including bowls and other open forms, lidded forms and plates. Participants will look at how to make their works more dynamic and create intriguing spatial relationships between forms and their surfaces, as well as how to draw inspiration from diverse sources. Drawing on her background in painting as well as ceramics, Walker will teach surface techniques using colored slips and glazes that can be brushed on to exploit the possibilities of color. Participants are asked to bring to class a thought or small object that inspires them. All levels including beginners are welcome.
