Interested in spending Summer 2011 in Rwanda? Come check out Dartmouth Humanitarian  
Engineering (DHE) TODAY Tuesday Feb 22nd at 6:30pm in McLean B01 (Thayer School  
of Engineering)

DHE sends students to developing countries every summer and oftentimes in other  
terms too. Right now DHE is working on a hydroelectric turbine system to be implemented  
in Rwanda in collaboration with e.quinox (a student group from Imperial College,  
London, UK).

HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT
	Our group will be implementing a hydroelectric system that will generate electricity  
for a rural community in Rwanda using the energy stored in running water. DHE  
has been working on developing this technology for a few years and implemented  
two systems in Rwanda in the past.

	There will be a lot of preparation happening in the Spring, including practicing  
at a local hydroelectric site nearby, and we will spend the Summer implementing  
our system and setting up a self-sustainable business alongside e.quinox in Rwanda.

COMPLETELY STUDENT RUN
	DHE prides itself in being completely student run. That means we make all of  
the decisions about how we implement our project.
	
YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE AN ENGINEER
	Don't know anything about hydroelectricity or about engineering? Not a problem.  
DHE is focuses on diversifying the interests of its group members to gain a more  
balanced insight into the communities in which it works. That means we want people  
from all different departments to get involved and work and travel with us. No  
matter what your major, if you have an interest in visiting rural villages in  
developing countries we want you to tell us your ideas and what you think you  
could gain from a trip to one of the countries in which we're working.

	We will also spend a lot of time preparing and gaining the necessary knowledge  
in the next few months. There will be opportunities to learn a ton of new things  
and use them in the summer, as well as bring your own experience, teach others  
and use them on this project.

APPLICATION PROCESS
	DHE can only take a limited number of students on this trip. We will therefore  
have an application process where you'll have plenty of opportunities to tell  
us why and how you fit into this initiative. You will need to first submit a written  
application to DHE by email by next week (specific date TBA) and we will then  
invite you for a short interview/chat to get to know you better.

	You can find the application attached to this email. We will also have some printed  
copies at next week's info session. Feel free to bring any questions about the  
application or the project to the info session.

	If for any reason you can't make it to the info session but are still interested  
in the project, let us know and we'd be happy to meet with you at another time.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES
	Interested in the project but can't travel in the Summer? we have tons of engineering  
and non-engineering related things you can work on; exciting projects, tasks,  
research, independent studies you could take on. Come to the info session and  
learn about them.

	To get to McLean B01 enter Thayer School of Engineering through big glass doors  
(newer building) and take a left, stairs downstairs and you'll see a big classroom  
(MB01) right next to the stairs. We will have signs pointing you in the right  
direction too.
