About the Keynote:
Dean Spears is the Acting Dean of the College as of August 2009.  She served  as director of the Office of Pluralism and Leadership/Associate Dean of Student Life at Dartmouth, and later as Acting Senior Associate Dean of the College.  Prior to her time at Dartmouth, she taught courses in counseling, research methods, higher education law and cultural competence.  She has a background working with affirmative action/equal opportunity and multicultural student services in university settings, and also has extensive experience teaching, practicing and consulting in the development of culturally competent practices in organizational and educational settings.

About the Topic:
Lateral oppression is the concept of tension or misunderstanding between groups  who identify with the same social identity group (i.e. race, ethnicity, culture, class, religion, sexuality, gender, national identity).  Problems arising from within a certain group is prevalent, and Dean Spears will speak not only about how this applies to the many different groups at Dartmouth, but also address ways in which we can resolve these issues to create more unified communities.
