(!) >Date: Fri, 5 Nov 1999 12:41:58 -0500 We about to purchase our first multi-format VCR/converter (we are a small liberal arts college) and I am thinking about a different plan instead of charging for conversions. If I make the conversion onto a tape that belongs to the library collection and make the loan period short, the person requesting the copy will have to return the tape to be re-used. The quality of the conversion will suffer certainly, as it will be made on a tape that is re-used, but it will be a "one time use" to comply with copyright guidelines, right? What do others think of this idea? Here we also charge for video conversions and duplications. The way I see it, it's more of a way to make users think if they really need to have the materials converted or not, since we do have quite a few multistandard players in the classrooms. Here is our fee system: VHS conversion Dept. Charge -> $5.00 The tape shouldn't be more than 2 hours long, although this is somewhat flexible. Blank tape provided by dept., or us at a charge. Personal -> $20.00 Same rules as above. VHS duplication Dept. Charge -> $2.00 Same rules as above Personal -> $5.00 Same rules as above Audio duplication We only duplicate language tapes for a nominal fee. ($1.00/60 mins. $1.25/90 mins.) We are trying to put as many of these online as we can, provided we get permission from the publisher. All in all, video duplication and conversion is not something we do very often, plus you should always keep in mind copyright law and restrictions. My two cents. _____________________________ Eduardo Lage Otero Director, Language & Instructional Media Center Eads Hall, Lower Level Phone: (314) 935-5165 Campus Box 1023 FAX: (314) 935-7255 One Brookings Drive E-mail:[log in to unmask] St. Louis MO 63130 http://www.artsci.wustl.edu/limc/ Washington University in St. Louis __________________________________________________________ On Thu, 4 Nov 1999, LLTI-Editor wrote: > --- Forwarded Message from Don Sundheim <[log in to unmask]> --- > > >Date: Wed, 03 Nov 1999 16:37:27 -0600 > >To: Language Learning and Technology International Information Forum <[log in to unmask]> > >From: Don Sundheim <[log in to unmask]> > >Subject: charges for services? > >In-Reply-To: <[log in to unmask]> > > ------------------ > Do any of you have fees for services such as foreign video conversion, > duplication of videos, audio cassettes etc.? > > The reason I ask is that we are being asked to "justify" our charges to > internal auditors.
