The title of the symposium is: "Translating Cultures: A Symposium in Honor of the Memory of Joseph Brodsky - American Citizen, English Essayist, Russian Poet." The symposium will be divided into three (successive) round-tables on the following general topics: (1) Locating Culture, (2) Existing in Translation: A Local Perspective, (3) More Than One: Translation as Creation, or "what is gained in translation." AThe symposium is designed to be interdisciplinary and multicultural. We expect the participation anthropologists, sociologists, historians, and literary scholars in addition to theoreticians and practitioners of translation. Gennadiy Komarov, publisher of the only authorized edition of the complete collected works of Brodsky in Russia, will be a special guest. Mr. Komarov will be a Visiting Scholar at YSU during the month of January through mid-February. The symposium is free and open to the public. A luncheon and an evening poetry reading have also been scheduled.
