Friday Night Sing-Ins

Date: Friday, January 25, 2019, 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Location: Paddock Music Library, Dartmouth College Library

Cost: Free

Join us every Friday evening from 5-6:30PM during the month of January for the Sing-Ins in the Paddock Music Library. You do not need to be an experienced or "good" singer to participate. Our motto is, "If you can talk, you can sing!" The Sing-Ins are a chance to learn the music of social movements in America, to sing them with others who enjoy making music, and to discuss the questions that such music raises. For the past two years, these events have taught the songs of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. This year, we take a look at labor movements in America, with parallels related to race, class, and gender.

The Matisse Jazz Project

Date: Sunday, January 27, 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Location: ArtisTree Community Arts Center, 2095 Pomfret Rd, South Pomfret, VT

Cost: $20 per ticket

Christopher Bakriges and Zack Brock will play a set of pieces inspired by the paper cuttings of Henri Matisse on Sunday, January 27th at 4pm at ArtisTree.
Matisse was elderly and ill, and he could hardly lift a paint brush, let alone reach the canvas, so he let his creativity flow via papier gouaché, or painted paper cuttings.
Pianist Chris Bakriges and violinist Zack Brock of Snarky Puppy perform original jazz.
Improvising Matisse
The Matisse Jazz Project is music inspired by the iconic cut paper collages of Henri Matisse published in 1947 as Jazz. The twenty pieces composed by pianist Christopher Bakriges correspond to each of the Matisse Jazz cutouts and his writings. Matisse viewed jazz as a "chromatic and rhythmic improvisation" and evoked the idea of a structure of rhythm and repetition broken by the unexpected action of improvisations. Matisse wrote, "There are wonderful things in real jazz, the talent for improvisation, the liveliness, the being at one with the audience." Bakriges leaves his own stunningly touching and virtuosic homage to the legacy of a leading figure in modern art.
