I second these observations. I 89 from New London to West Leb is littered with dead squirrels. They seem to be hurtling themselves at oncoming traffic. I avoided a few by swerving into the other lane. Not a great maneuver when going 70 miles an hour.

Is the excessive road kill due to an explosion in squirrel population or something else?

On the subject of the over abundance of squirrel leading to an unusual number of roadkill...

Yesterday, on a drive down east to the coast of Maine, in Concord I took the ramp connecting I-89 with I-93 south.  Both sides of the ramp was littered with dead squirrels, one every couple of feet.  Too many to actually count, but there must have been a hundred or so in less than a tenth of a mile.  Sort of like a squirrel cemetery.
