CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Papers,  Posters, and  Technology  Showcase

PROPOSAL DEADLINE: AUGUST 31, 2018

While we especially welcome abstracts that address the conference theme, Connecting Communities, Languages & Technology, we also welcome abstracts on other subjects in language documentation and conservation, which may include but are not limited to:

• Connecting communities, languages & technology
• Archiving matters
• Assessing success in documentation and revitalization strategies
• Community experiences of revitalization
• Data management
• Ethical issues
• Language planning
• Lexicography and grammar design
• Methods of assessing ethnolinguistic vitality
• Orthography design
• Teaching/learning small languages
• Topics in areal language documentation
• Training in documentation methods – beyond the university

Presentation formats

Papers will be allowed 20 minutes for presentation with 10 minutes of question time.
Posters will be on display throughout the day of presentation. Poster presentations will run during the lunch period. Poster presentations are recommended for authors who wish to present smaller, more specific topics or descriptions of particular projects. 
Technology Showcase.  A new feature to be introduced at ICLDC 2019 is the Technology Showcase, which is a networking event for developers, linguists, and community members involved in creating, repurposing, or otherwise utilizing a wide variety of technologies for language work to interact in an informal, hands-on session. During this 2-3 hour event on Friday, March 1, developers will be given space to exhibit their tools and products, and conference participants will have the opportunity to freely circulate and interact with the technologies and developers. The Technology Showcase will provide an opportunity for face-to-face contact and hopefully lead to productive collaborations—both between developers and communities, and also between developers and between communities who might not be aware of others working on similar efforts. We are soliciting developers (broadly defined) to submit proposals that outline the tool that they have developed, which include but are not limited to software, apps, web technologies, repurposed uses of software, novel scripts. 

Abstract submission information

• Abstracts should be submitted in English, but presentations can be in any language. We particularly welcome presentations in languages of the region discussed. 
• Authors may submit no more than one individual and one co-authored proposal (including participation in a Workshop or Talk Story Session proposal), or no more than two co-authored proposals. In no case may an author submit more than one individually-authored proposal.
• Proposals for general papers, posters, and technology showcases are due by August 31, 2018, with notification of acceptance by October 1, 2018.
• We will not be accepting any proposals for panel presentations or colloquia.  
• Because of limited space, please note that the Abstract Review Committee may ask that some general abstracts submitted as papers be presented as posters instead. 
• Selected authors will be invited to submit their conference papers to the journal Language Documentation & Conservation for publication.

How to prepare your abstract proposal

• Content: Proposals should describe the content of your presentation, including the intended audience and how it relates to the conference themes.
• Abstract Length: Please limit your proposal to 400 words, not including references. 
• Anonymity: To facilitate blind peer review, please do not include your name or affiliation in your abstract or filename. Your proposal should only include your presentation title, abstract, and list of references (if applicable). If you are including references/citations to your own work in your abstract, please be sure to replace your name(s) with "Author." For example, if you are Ted Smith and you wrote an article in 2009, which you are citing in your file (i.e., Smith (2009) ), you would change it to "Author (2009)."  If you are including a list of references at the end, also make sure to anonymize any of your publications similarly as well.
• Format:  Please submit your abstract as a PDF file.

NOTE: Please also prepare a 50-word summary of your abstract for inclusion in the conference program. This will be entered in a separate field in the submission form, not in your abstract PDF file.


Abstract submission system (EasyChair)
For ICLDC 2019, we will be using the Easychair abstract submission system for the general session submissions. You will first need to sign up for a free Easychair Author account if you don't already have one. From there you can submit your abstract as an Author and make any updates or modifications to your proposal submission up to the August 31 deadline.
