The problem of widening inequality in America pervades our society and negatively affects many people. While the wealthy have gotten wealthier, the middle class is decreasing and many Americans feel “left behind”, regressing economically and unable to pursue The American Dream. And most important, Americans are more economically segregated than ever before, limiting social contact between the affluent and the poor. On Thursday, July 26, Kathy Edin, professor of Sociology & Public Affairs at Princeton, will speak on the widening inequality problem in America. She will focus on the perilous economic and social inequality challenges faced by the poor. She is widely considered the foremost voice of people living in poverty in our country and has written two books on the subject, $2-a-day: The Art of Living on Virtually Nothing in America and Coming of Age in the Other America, which she will sign during intermission.
