Chipping Sparrow trilling early this morning, first one here this year on our property in Orford. This afternoon, a Broad-winged Hawk called while flying over. Earlier this week (Monday), we checked the American Woodcock nest that we found and an adult was there, almost completely covered in sleet, we kept our distance so as not to scare it off the nest. After a powerful wind storm, we checked again and the adult was gone. Subsequent checks this week turned up no incubating adult and three eggs still sitting there. I’m sure the female has tried again nearby as there are still lots of courtship and territorial displays going on, with multiple birds flying around our property at dawn and dusk.
