If I'm at all concerned about bears, which I'm not, I bring the feeders in at night. I'm visited by bears every few years. They are not keen on my dogs and usually give the barn and feeders a wide berth ... but I do have a tube feeder peppered with ursine teeth marks that has been elevated to conversation piece.

It's because of the odd ice-storm treats like earlier this week (and the families of evening and rose-breasted grosbeaks that visit in July) that I feed throughout year. Almost every year mid-spring I have a couple of male ruby-throated hummingbirds that hover around the sometimes defend the breasts of male rose-breasted grosbeaks; for their part, the grosbeaks demurely sit on the post of the tube feeder, cracking sunflower seeds. If I took my feeders in on the first of April I'd miss the show.

A total of 14 species visited my feeders during and just after the ice/slush/snow/freezing rain; like everyone else I fed mostly juncos (a hundred or more) and goldfinches; although Monday morning, a sapsucker came for breakfast, a first at my feeders in more than forty years of hanging suet. Also, a pair of fox sparrows and a turkey scavenged sunflower seeds under the feeders.

Skeletal crew today, however: hairy and downies, chickadees and bluejays, a small group of goldfinches ... and a lone junco.
