DEN Faculty Entrepreneurship Workshop Series

Fridays, 27 April (SKIP 4 May), 11 May and 18 May 2018; 4:00PM-5:30PM, followed by networking

 

Jake Reder, PhD, Director, New Ventures Office, Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and Cofounder, Director, & Chief Executive Officer, Celdara Medical will moderate this 3-week DEN Faculty Entrepreneurship Workshop Series. Workshops will address a wide range of key issues along the startup continuum and provide practical, down-to-earth guidance that will give faculty a well-rounded understanding of how to put their ideas into action, including Intellectual Property ownership and commercialization and the connection with academia, market validation, product development, new venture formation, scaling, and venture financing.

Workshop Sessions

Friday, 27 April, 4:00PM - 5:30PM

Class of 1930 Room, Rockefeller Center

Session 1: Faculty Intellectual Property ownership and commercialization and the connection with academia

This session will cover principles of IP ownership and commercialization, and special considerations when IP is developed in connection with your role at Dartmouth.

·        Patrick Bradley, Senior Business Development and Licensing Manager, Technology Transfer at Dartmouth College

·        Bill Hudenko, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Dartmouth College and Co-founder, Voi

 

What you will learn:

  • Introduction to the mindset and entrepreneurship
  • IP formation and the patent system
  • How technology transfer works, and how to negotiate technology transfer agreements
  • Ethical and conflict of interest issues in academic entrepreneurship

Session 2: Faculty New Venture Formation

This session will cover the topics of new venture formation, legal considerations, and market validation techniques.

Session 3: Faculty Fundraising & Venture Financing

This session aims to provide foundational knowledge of venture capital and R&D funding, strategic partners, incubators, and government resources, as well as discuss the need to communicate beyond the confines of one’s discipline.

Jake Reder, PhD, Director, New Ventures Office, Geisel School of Medicine and Cofounder, Director, & Chief Executive Officer, Celdara Medical

Jake cofounded Celdara Medical and currently serves as a Director and as CEO. He had previously founded the New Ventures Office at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and still serves as its first Director. Prior to Dartmouth, Jake led business development, open innovation, and knowledge management initiatives at Cabot Corporation where he served as a member of Cabot's Research Council, Technology Board, and Nanotechnology EHS Council. Jake joined Cabot from PolyTechnos Venture-Partners, a Munich-based venture capital firm. He has served on numerous non- and for-profit boards, including Virtici, MBV, StemSynergy Therapeutics, NIH's TREAT Program and the University of Vermont's SPARK Program. Jake has testified before Congress on entrepreneurship, was appointed by the Governor to the New Hampshire Innovation Research Center's Board of Directors, and by US Senator Jeanne Shaheen to her Small Business Advisory Council. Jake earned a B.Sc. with First Class Honours from the University of Waterloo, and a Ph.D. (Chemistry) as a Brown-Wetherill Fellow at Purdue University and Ludwig Maximilians Universitat.
