I looked up the purple finch in Cornell "Birds of North America" (subscriber). There seems to be an immature PF with a similar look, but there is also a yellow variant that could fit your photos. I also wonder if these are leucistic birds...

A search for the variant /photos brings up quite a variety. Not all are reliable, however.

I don't know if you can see these from the Macaulay Library. Quite a lot of variation there too.

And one of them was ever stranger looking. The patch was larger and the bird had a very yellow-orange tint.
