The Yale Center for Language Study (CLS) invites applications for the position of Testing and Assessment Specialist. The successful candidate will—in collaboration with the CLS Director and Associate Director—develop and implement institution-wide standards and procedures for language testing. The CLS supports and promotes the study of language and culture by fostering a community of practice for language instructors and teaching fellows and by offering diverse language programs across the university. The CLS is committed to innovation and excellence in language education, informed by current research, and to lifelong learning both inside and beyond the classroom.

Summary of essential duties:
1. Conducts ongoing needs assessments across departments regarding language testing.
2. Builds consensus among faculty around the need to align internal measures of language proficiency with national proficiency standards in order to gain a more objective measure of progress.
3. Collaborates with professional organizations and peer institutions regarding testing and assessment issues; develops partnerships to share expertise about assessment methodologies and technology solutions.
4. Oversees all ongoing language assessments within the CLS, including online placement testing, online oral testing, and proficiency assessments.
5. Investigates new testing and assessment solutions.
6. Maintains and improves current testing instruments to ensure that testing and assessments are effective and ensures quality control of testing and assessment instruments.
8. Remains current on the latest developments in testing and assessment and maintains and/or develops the technical skills and expertise required to implement state-of-the-art online and software-based approaches to assessment.

Required Education and Experience:

  *   Master’s degree in foreign language, TESOL, or applied linguistics or closely related field plus two years of experience in language teaching or assessment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  *   Familiarity with standard language assessment frameworks, such as the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and the Common European Framework of Reference. ACTFL OPI certification preferred.
  *   Familiarity with online and software-based testing platforms; possess appropriate technical skills to support existing computer-based testing.
