Cornell University invites applications for the position of Director of the Language Resource Center (LRC). Language study is integral to Cornell's educational mission as a key component of diversity, an essential basis for meaningful and effective communication in the global environment, a significant source of intercultural engagement and understanding within and beyond the U.S., a foundation for access to literary and area studies, a basis for global scientific inquiry and engagement, and a fundamental component of advanced research for internationally affiliated fields and programs across the university. Approximately forty-five languages are offered at Cornell, with approximately half of these being Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs). They are offered through language and cultural studies departments, through distance learning in cooperation with other universities, through pre-departure courses for study and service learning abroad, through target language supplements to courses in standard disciplines, and through English language support for international students. There is also increasing cross-college demand for language instruction from constituencies with new needs, following demographic changes and an increase in student engagement in international education. The Director of the LRC will provide vision and leadership in language teaching and learning to foster innovative pedagogies, interdisciplinary curricular projects, and collaborative structures to advance the mission of language education. Working closely with colleagues to provide resources and services to faculty, graduate student instructors, and language learners across Cornell, the Director will play a supportive role in innovative instructional design and uses of technology in language teaching. In addition, the Director will shape language-learning opportunities that match evolving programmatic goals, engaging with programs, departments, and faculty that offer off-campus and international educational experiences. The Director provides administrative leadership, including oversight of the LRC budget and personnel. She or he will be expected to sponsor speakers and workshops in the field of second language acquisition. The Director will be expected to seek internal and external grant opportunities to support the mission of language education. She or he will also be expected to facilitate projects and grant proposals from the faculty who teach language, and from faculty seeking to incorporate language study into curricular or programmatic plans. The Director represents the LRC and the language teaching mission throughout the University community and participates in university-wide groups, committees, and initiatives related to language study. The Director serves as the key representative to cross-institutional language instruction projects. In this context, she or he will be expected, as opportunities arise, to develop networks that support awareness of the roles of language study and of the forms, formats, and needs for language learning, across the institution. The Director serves as the Cornell representative to the Consortium on Language Teaching and Learning, and at language study related conferences. This position reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Arts and Humanities, in the College of Arts and Sciences. Anticipated academic rank: Senior Lecturer (full-time five-year renewable appointment). Compensation commensurate with qualifications and experience. Qualifications 1. Master's degree in Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field; Ph.D. preferred. 2. Five years of academic, administrative, and supervisory experience in higher education directly related to foreign language teaching and learning. 3. Five years of experience (post-degree) teaching and designing language courses at the college level. 4. Native or near-native command of English and competency in at least one other language. 5. Experience with budgetary planning and personnel management; grant writing and grant administration experience preferred. 6. Familiarity with current and emerging technologies (e.g., distance learning, multimedia, interactive web-based applications). 7. International experience and demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism. 8. Strategic planning, project management, and risk management skills. 9.
