woman. Dinner will be served for all attendees. The night will end with
a workshop to develop some of those skills together where attendees will

Tuesday, February 13: Technology and Mental Health. This is in
coordination with the Graduate Student Council's Mental Health Awareness
Month. Dartmouth post-doctoral researcher, Dr. Valerie Noel, is a member
of "The Dartmouth Project." The Dartmouth Project investigates how the
growing use of technology is impacting mental health and also how
technology could be used to better deliver care. Facebook link to come.
Tuesday, March 13th: Science Policy Journal Club. The STEPS leadership
team will decide on the paper closer to the date. But this will be used
as an opportunity to dissect a good white paper in preparation for our
annual competition in the Spring. The grand prize for the white paper
competition is $250! Facebook Link to come.
Congressional Visit Day March 15th-16th, Washington D.C.
CVD is perhaps our most exciting event of the year! It is a fantastic
opportunity for professional development and to get to see how Congress
works from the inside. Please read this section fully if you are
interested in participating. CVD is hosted/organized by our national
affiliate, the National Science Policy Group. Here is their website:
https://natscipolgroup.wordpress.com/. They coordinate graduate students
to attend this event from dozens of colleges and universities
nation-wide. NSPG also hosts a mandatory communication training day (on
the 15th) before you are released in the halls of Congress (on the 16th).
Significant preparation work (15+ hours) is expected of attendees to
make the most out of this event.
The STEPS leadership team will be selecting 3 graduate students or
Post-docs to attend the CVD. Our undergraduate liaison is pursuing a
source of funding for undergraduates, but in any case we will only send
a maximum of 4 people. If you are an Undergrad and interested in
attending, you should still send in an application, in case funding does
come through. We also prefer to have one of the participants be somebody
who has attended in the past. Participants will be responsible for the
logistical planning of the trip and securing funding for travel expenses
(we will assist with the funding process). Additionally, participants
must organize a presentation lunch, for our Spring term lunch series, to
report back what you learned and share fun pictures.
To apply for the trip, please send the following information to this
email in a 1 page or less word doc by next week Tuesday, January 9th at
5pm.

of activity in STEPS. Secondary criteria will be making sure our
delegation covers a diverse field of topics and quality of responses in
the application. The timeline for this is very quick, so please get your
applications in sooner rather than later!
NH Statehouse Visit Date to be determined. Concord, NH
We are in the preliminary phases of organizing a day trip to visit the
NH State Capitol building. STEPS will likely cover the cost of
transportation and organize carpools. This event will be open to more
people than the CVD and will be first-come first-serve RSVPs. We will
start taking RSVPs by the end of January. Keep your eyes peeled!

This series of four meetings is designed to help you learn to be an
effective mentor, not only for future students you might have, but also
for undergraduate students and others you might be supervising right now.
It is often said that good mentoring can be learned, but not taught. We
will try to teach you, but you all will have to be receptive and ready
to learn to make the experience worth your time. Each student you
encounter in your careers will be different, and so to be an effective
mentor you have to learn strategies that can be applied to deal with
different mentoring situations.
During our four meetings, we will discuss approaches to mentoring and
provide various case studies that will give you a chance to analyze
approaches and decide for yourselves those you think provide effective
mentoring strategies. In so doing, we hope you generate for yourselves a
mentoring bag of tricks that will help you deal with the myriad
interpersonal situations you might expect to encounter during your
career.
Our role will be to facilitate the discussions, ask questions, keep the
group focused, and point out certain principles of good mentoring as
they arise. As you might imagine, your role as an attendee will require
you to participate willingly in the discussions, so please come prepared
to do just that.

In January's LCFF, we'll discuss some awkward encounters among students
and educators, getting advice from campus partners about resources and
strategies for dealing with these situations and possible ways to avoid
them.
In order to cultivate a community focused on teaching and learning
amongst graduate students and postdocs, DCAL has established a Learning
Community for Future Faculty (LCFF). The focus of this group is to share
the rewards and challenges of college teaching, while digging a bit
deeper into best practices and techniques for teaching. The LCFF meets
monthly on the 2nd Monday of the

At RWIT, graduate peer tutors can help you develop more effective
strategies for generating and organizing your ideas, finding and
evaluating research sources, and presenting and revising compositions in
a variety of media. The graduate tutors are available to assist graduate
students of any discipline with the academic communication process.

Support for Non-Native Speakers of English/International Students
Non-native English speakers and/or international students may face
unique challenges in the writing process and in preparation of academic
papers and presentations. Betsy Tremmell has extensive experience
working with non-native speakers of English and is available as a
resource for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who identify
as international/non-native English speakers.
Betsy earned her M.A. in TESOL/Applied Linguistics at Iowa State
University and her Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition at UW-Madison,
and has taught academic writing to non-native English speakers in
academia for the past 12 years. She is excited to have the opportunity
to work with international graduate students and postdoctoral scholars
at Dartmouth, and is available to work one-on-one with students on any
type of text, whether written or oral.
