LeeAnn, that beetle still lives, albeit in Macon, GA.  I sent it to my brother there several years ago in order not to subject it to harsh Kansas winters.  He finally sold it to an enthusiast down the street from him.  But it is 48 years old and still purring!  And, yes, I now have a red New Beetle :-).  Old hippies never grow up!

I, too, have vivid memories of both these amazing women. Especially of Virginia and her Beetle! Didn't know those cars could move so fast until she had to get me to the airport last minute.

And Irene-- hope she continues her yard-saling adventures in Kansas. We used to compare purchases :--)

I remember Irene fondly as the “Rory” of IALLT conferences. She nearly always had a book in hand, sitting in a corner reading!

(my daughters would be so proud of my reference above…kudos to those with whom it registers)

Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day.
Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.
