The nation’s pioneer land-grant university and a member of the Association of American Universities, Michigan State University is a research-intensive institution with 17 degree-granting colleges. Starting with the 2017-2018 academic year, CeLTA will be part of the School of Language Sciences & Literary and Cultural Studies, which is in the process of being formed from the merger of the Department of Linguistics & Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African Languages, the Department of Romance and Classical Studies, and the Second Language Studies program. The School brings together teachers and scholars of language learning and teaching, world literatures and cultures, and linguistics to investigate cultural production, local and global communities, language learning, and cognition viewed through the lens of the great variety and diversity of the world’s languages. The School's collaborative environment,in which CeLTA will play a crucial role, aims to promote a world-class research agenda, innovative teaching, opportunities for outreach and community service, and enhanced learning experiences for students. The School will be housed in the College of Arts & Letters and will join a vibrant arts and humanities community that has benefited from university support evidenced by CeLTA, an expanding Less Commonly Taught Language program, and world-renowned education abroad initiatives. The CeLTA Director will report to the School Director.

Responsibilities of the Director of CeLTA include:

• developing and implementing a well-articulated vision that addresses the ways in which CeLTA can be a leader in the School, including collaborative initiatives that further the Center’s mission and advance the School’s many programs;
• supervising the executive associate director, who oversees the day-to-day operations of the Center, and supervising CeLTA faculty;
• teaching 2 courses per year in one or more of the School programs;
• supporting School faculty, language programs, and language learners in areas including instructional technologies, professional development, assessment needs, and other types of academic support;
• incorporating multicultural perspectives into teaching for 21st century leadership; and
• supporting and/or collaborating with School faculty as they seek and apply for grants.

Minimum Requirements

• Ph.D.in an area relevant to any of the language programs of the School. Areas of specialization may include second language acquisition, applied linguistics, language education, testing and assessment, cultural and literary studies, and/or instructional digital technology and design;
• near-native proficiency in English and in a language taught in the School; 
• experience teaching at the college level; 
• a significant record of scholarship in the candidate’s area of expertise;
• experience in grant writing; and
• demonstrated leadership skills.
