Since its founding in April 2017, the DOC Environmental Stewardship Committee has been working to track, reduce, and offset the carbon emissions produced by outing club trips and consumption in order to become a carbon neutral organization. As college students and passionate outdoors people, the protection of the environment is central to our enjoyment of outdoor recreation.

Here's a little bit of background from the DOC Mission Statement:

The purpose of the Dartmouth Outing Club shall be to further, through camaraderie in the out-of-doors of a diverse and inclusive membership, the educational objectives of Dartmouth College and its principle of community, by stimulating an appreciation of nature and environmental stewardship, a knowledge of the fundamental crafts of outdoor living, the creative use of leisure time, and above all, the development of such personal traits as initiative, integrity, tolerance, self-reliance, and leadership.

While the DOC excels at many of these objectives, it falls short when it comes to appreciation for nature and environmental stewardship. In the past, the DOC has been one of Dartmouth's shining lights for Environmentalism:

In 1969, a year before the EPA was established, the DOC formed its Environmental Studies Division to promote environmental education and activism and to properly steward the landscape that serves as the foundation for its pursuits ... Members of ESD were influential in implementing a 1991 Environmental Studies 50 recommendation for the creation of the Dartmouth Organic Farm. In 1995 ESD members also established the first photovoltaic system at Dartmouth.

However, in the past 20 years environmentalism has fallen out of fashion within the DOC, yet we, as a club, rely on the environment around us to pursue the outdoor sports we love. Currently, we do very little to protect or better the wonders of nature we spend so much time in.

In order to assess the values and needs of the DOC, as well as plan, and execute ideas for improving the relationship of the DOC andenvironmentalism, the DOC will be forming a committee, dedicated to addressing these issues. This will include, but is not limited to:
1. Stewardship opportunities near the Dartmouth campus
2. Studying the DOC's carbon emissions for different trips and ways to offset these, so we can run the trips we want to, but can do it responsibly
3. Promoting more sustainable engagement with nature on trips

While it is a big, and intimidating task, fighting for a green DOC will be worth the effort! We can find a solution to allow the DOC to continue pursuing all its activities while reducing the wear and tear we put on the environment.

Applications will close Monday, September 25th at midnight.

Let us know if you have questions!
