Dear Researchers,

U.S. Export Control Laws restrict the distribution of strategically important technology, services and information to foreign nationals and foreign countries for reasons of foreign policy and national security.  Fortunately the majority of Dartmouth research is classified as fundamental and able to be freely disseminated and, as such, exempted from export controls.  However, the topic of export controls is significantly broader than what is called the fundamental research exemption, and export controls encompass much more than defense related research.  Researchers in many areas can inadvertently trip  up against export controls if certain steps are not taken.

Dartmouth will offer a training seminar on compliance with export control regulations on Oct. 19th 2017, starting at 8.00 am at Haldeman Center, Room 041. The seminar is  meant to help identify and appropriately respond to any relevant exports control matters related  to research.  It will also cover more general areas such as travel abroad with data and materials, shipments of materials etc.

We invite all interested faculty, staff and students to join the general overview session starting at 8.00 am, and gain important knowledge that will help manage research and avoid problems down the road.  Several additional breakout sessions have been designed for targeted audiences and lunch will be provided.

You will find a preliminary schedule below. There will also be an opportunity for faculty to schedule individual sessions to discuss relevant research areas.  Additional information will follow. Please distribute to faculty, students and staff for whom you think this information is applicable and useful.

We would be very interested in additional topics/areas that you believe should be addressed and welcome any further input. Please contact the Research Compliance Office at 603 646 0703  or [log in to unmask]  directly with ideas, questions, or suggestions.
