This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, July 10th, 2017. A YELLOW-NOSED ALBATROSS was photographed at the Isles of Shoals on July 3rd and 4th. It was flying near White Island, Seavey Island, and Star Island and landed several times. A BROWN PELICAN was photographed in the same area on July 5th. A BLACK TERN, 2 ARCTIC TERNS, and a GREAT CORMORANT were seen at the Isles of Shoals on July 9th. An adult SANDHILL CRANE was photographed along Route 3 in some large fields in Twin Mountain about a mile from the Carroll-Whitefield Town Line on July 4th, and 2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen in a field on Deerfield Road in Nottingham on July 7th. 2 MISSISSIPPI KITES continue to be seen at their nest site area in Newmarket, and were last reported on July 9th. A possible SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was photographed in Chatham on July 8th and 9th, but has not been relocated. A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was discovered in a small pond near the start of Sleepy Hollow Drive in Greenland on June 15th, has been seen numerous times since then, and was last reported on July 3rd. 5 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen in Hampton Harbor on July 9th. 2 LEAST BITTERNS were reported from World End Pond in Salem on July 4th. A STILT SANDPIPER was seen in the pools located west of Route 1A just south of Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on July 9th – an early southbound migrant! 11 PIPING PLOVERS were tallied along Seabrook and Hampton Beaches on July 9th. Beach-goers are encouraged to give these small, endangered birds room to roam. The adults and chicks blend in with the beach, so please tread carefully! 4 pairs of LEAST TERNS were seen nesting on Hampton Beach on July 9th. Like the PIPING PLOVERS, these birds need space to successfully raise chicks so please be mindful when visiting the beach. 3 ROSEATE TERNS were seen in Hampton Harbor on July 9th. 2 NELSON’S SPARROWS were reported from the coast on July 9th. 4 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were reported from the Concord Airport on July 5th. An ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen in Orford on July 5th. 10 PURPLE MARTINS were seen at Cross Beach Road in Seabrook on July 1st, and a pair was seen at Great East Lake in Wakefield on July 5th. 2 BICKNELL’S THRUSHES, 2 GRAY JAYS, and 4 BOREAL CHICKADEES were seen along the Caps Ridge Trail in Jefferson Notch on July 4th. A RED CROSSBILL was reported from Washington on July 5th, and 2 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen at Trudeau Road in Bethlehem on July 9th. 2 EVENING GROSBEAKS have been seen repeatedly in Richmond during the past week, and were last reported on July 7th.
