Dear DOC,

Welcome back to winter!  If you’d like to learn how to Tele ski, or to brush up on your skills, here’s your chance.   I’m offering a series of one-afternoon beginner clinics at the Dartmouth Skiway (dates below). Telemark turning is a great skill to have for backcountry free-heel skiing and lots of fun to practice at an alpine area.

We’ll leave Robinson Hall at 12:30; take a van up to the Skiway; get outfitted with skis, boots and poles; do our clinic, and be back to campus sometime between 4:30 and 5:00.   Eat lunch before you come, or bring one with you.  (If you’re rushed, you can grab something at the café at the Skiway)

Wear the clothes you would normally wear for alpine skiing, and bring your ski helmet if you have one.  If you don¹t have a helmet, we’ll outfit you at the Skiway.

The Skiway has about 10-12 sets of tele skis and boots we can use, so there probably will be something in your size.   If you want to be extra sure, borrow from a friend or check out some backcountry skis (with metal edges), backcountry boots and poles from Rentals in advance.   This is an OPO sponsored program for DOC members, so there would be no charge for that.

We’ll start out on the “magic carpet” (bunny hill), and then depending on people’s comfort level with the skis, we may or may not take the Winslow lift up to the top of the hill.

No previous Telemark experience is expected, as this is a beginner clinic, but you should be comfortable on either cross-country skis or alpine skis.  And if you have done some tele turns before, you can use the session to practice and share your skills.

Space at each clinic is limited to 5 students, so contact [log in to unmask], or at 646-0351, or in person at the OPO office to reserve a space for one of the dates below.  And feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  Thanks to the Ski Way and Dartmouth Athletics for their support of this program.
