Science Policy Mini-Conference |
Hello Everybody, We have some exciting news! We are ready to announce the Science Policy Mini Conference! It will take place on Saturday, November 12th from 10:30am-2:30pm. The talks will be in Haldeman 041. STEPS will also provide a lunch in between the speakers. There is no membership requirement to attend this event. You may also attend as much of the mini conference as your schedule allows, but we encourage you to attend the whole thing!
We will have two speakers that work in the field of science policy. Each talk will last for 90 mins, including at least 30 mins of discussion time.
Our first speaker is Dr. Heather Bloemhard from the American Astronomical Society. She will be giving the perspective of advocating for science from a professional society and the role professional societies play in our policy making.
Our second speaker is Dartmouth professor and clinician, Dr. H. Gilbert Welch. He has appointments in The Dartmouth Institute, Geisel School of Medicine, and the Tuck School of Business. Dr. Welch has written numerous best-selling books on public health matters related to the value of our healthcare system and the problems related to overdiagnosis. He will be talking about his advocacy in the public health realm.

Come have lunch and join James Geoghehan, Dartmouth Graduate Alum to hear about his career in biotech.
Bio Below:
James Geoghegan grew up in the Upper Valley and later attended Oberlin College, graduating in 1999. From 1999-2002 he worked as a laboratory scientist at the Seattle division of Celltech R&D. In 2002, James joined the MCB Graduate Program at Dartmouth and completed his PhD in 2008 in the Department of Biochemistry in the laboratory of Dr. Surachai Supattapone. Following graduation, James joined Adimab, LLC as an industrial postodoctoral scientist working in therapeutic antibody discovery. In 2009, he joined the laboratory of Dr. Beverly Davidson at the University of Iowa as a postodocal scholar with a focus on developing gene therapies for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. In 2013, James joined the antibody discovery and protein engineering group at MedImmune, the protein biologics division of AstraZeneca. In 2016, James returned to Adimab where he currently works as a Scientist II in antibody discovery and engineering.

DCAL's Learning Community for Future Faculty |
In order to cultivate a community focused on teaching and learning amongst graduate students and postdocs, DCAL has established a Learning Community for Future Faculty (LCFF). The focus of this group is to share the rewards and challenges of college teaching, while digging a bit deeper into best practices and techniques for teaching. Our November meeting, rescheduled to Nov 21, will look at learning through undergraduate research. Typically, the LCFF meets monthly on the 2nd Monday of the month. This year’s ISTF conference will center around the theme: ‘Tropical Forests in a Connected World: Collaborative Solutions for a Sustainable Future’ and will be held at Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies on January 27-28th, 2017. We are focusing on the need for a multidisciplinary approach to research and practice in the tropics and a stronger collaboration across sectors to attain sustainable resource use in the tropical belt. 2017 ISTF Keynote Speakers: Jan Mcalpine - World Future Council Omar Figueroa - Minister of Forest, Fisheries, the Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change of Belize Dr. Peter Holmgren - CIFOR Given your school’s international and interdisciplinary work, we invite you, your students, colleagues, and partners to apply to present a Building Block Talk (BBT) or poster presentation centered around this theme. We welcome diverse perspectives from international relations, policy, agriculture, forestry, biology, sociology, and from anyone who is working in applied research in the tropics. Category: Part-time (15-18 hrs a week) Pay Rate: $13.00 per hour Department: School of Graduate & Advanced Studies Reports to: Assistant Dean of Graduate Student Affairs, Kerry Landers
Position Description: The Communications Coordinator is tasked with website development and maintenance, photo and video production, and maintaining all social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, & Flickr) for the School of Graduate & Advanced Studies.
Key Accountabilities: I. Conducts interviews of various students, faculty, and administrators for informational and promotional videos II. Works closely with the Communications & Outreach Coordinator, to plan, analyze, and grow media presence for the GRAD School. III. Takes photos and videos of Dartmouth College campus— photos to be uploaded to the GRAD School Flickr account, and video used when appropriate. These photos will also be used for the entry-way digital slideshow. IV. Connects with the Graduate Student Council to photograph and document various student events taking place throughout the year. V. Attends Dartmouth’s monthly/bimonthly Social Media Workgroup meeting VI. Attends GSC Meetings to stay current of upcoming events VII. Touch base and coordinate with GSC Communications Chair and WebTeam for publicizing upcoming graduate student events and activities a. 2016-17 Communications Chair
