As part of Open Access week, DCAL is hosting 2 events:
Opening Access through Canvas Legally, 12:00pm - 1:00pm, Thursday, October 27, 2016
Learn about tools you can use in Canvas (and on other course web sites) to make it both easy and legal for your students to access the materials with which you most want them to engage. We’ll discuss questions such as:
- How do I know my use of copyrighted materials for teaching falls under 'Fair Use'?
- Is it OK to post PDFs of articles, chapters, or video materials in my Canvas site, and how much can I post?
- I want some – but not all – of my Canvas website to be publicly available to all– how does that work?
- What can students download after the course is over?
During this session, Dartmouth librarians and instructional designers will work with faculty to find answers to these common but complex questions. Using best practices, tools such as Creative Commons licenses, and open educational resources, you

Do you know your rights as an author and how to retain these rights? Do you know what tools you can use to increase impact and accessibility to your published work? Interested in learning more? Please
join us to learn about your author publication rights and the tools needed to manage your scholarly identity. By the end of the session you should:
- Know what your authors’ rights are and the importance of retaining these rights.
- Know how to determine which publishers support self-archiving and open access.
- Be familiar with copyright transfer agreements and your rights under the Dartmouth Faculty Open Access Policy.
- Know the tools and resources to use to insure maximum impact and accessibility for your published works.
- Know how to inform your graduate students about these issues as they approach the world of authorship and publishing.
