We are the nation’s premier medical research agency, serving as the foundation for the medical innovation sector, and making important medical discoveries that improve health and save lives! The National Institutes of Health has a number of Health Scientist Administrator vacancies. The salaries for these positions are based upon individual qualifications and professional experience. A full benefits package is available, which includes retirement, Thrift Savings Plan participation, health, life and long-term care insurance. As a Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer), you will stimulate, plan, direct, and evaluate activities for a portfolio of research projects, research program and other grant/awards, cooperative agreements, and/or contracts in the assigned program area and the discovery, development and evaluation of associated prevention and therapeutic strategies. As a Health Scientist Administrator (Scientific Review Officer), you will be responsible for the initial administrative and scientific merit review of grant applications for research programs and/or research training and career development grants through interaction with established scientists in a variety of fields. You will assure the fairness and consistency of the scientific peer review process and provide guidance on peer review policies and procedures to applicants, reviewers, and Institute staff. For graduate students and postdocs who choose a career path aimed at the pharmaceutical or software industries, it can come as an unpleasant surprise that these positions are just as elusive as academic ones. It's not uncommon for students going down this route to find themselves at a startup, or to work at one or more postdoctoral positions as they bide their time. Is there a way to shorten the process and make yourself more competitive? When should you start preparing for an industry career? What do hiring managers look for when they screen resumes? What aspects of your graduate career prepare you best for a career in industry? The answers may surprise you. In this talk I will discuss general principles for laying a strong foundation for an industry career, and provide specific examples of practical things that you can do to make yourself more competitive.
