This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, September 26th, 2016. A FORK-TAILED FLYCATCHER was seen by multiple observers in Lebanon on September 20th, but has not been relocated. A EURASIAN WIGEON was seen in the southeast part of Great Bay on September 23rd. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Hampton Harbor on September 22nd. 3 BLACK VULTURES were seen in Westmoreland, and 2 were seen in Nashua, all on September 20th. A SANDHILL CRANE has been seen somewhat regularly in a hayfield along Route 127 in West Hopkinton and irregularly in nearby Elm Brook Park since July 19th. It was last reported on September 25th. 2 SANDHILL CRANES, a DICKCISSEL and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR were seen at Sherman Farm in East Conway on September 26th. A DICKCISSEL was reported from River Road in Stratham on September 22nd. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen at Lake Sunapee State Beach on September 24th. A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was seen in Canterbury on September 25th. A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on September 24th, and 1 was seen in Portsmouth on the 20th. 2 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen in coastal Seabrook on September 21st. An AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was reported from coastal Rye on September 25th. A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen near Little Cherry Pond on September 26th, and a GREAT CORMORANT was seen at Cherry Pond on the 25th, both at the Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson. 2 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were reported from Pack Monadnock in Peterborough on September 24th, and a RED CROSSBILL was reported from Carter Hill in Concord on September 20th. A BLUE-WINGED WARBLER was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on September 24th. Several PHILADELPHIA VIREOS, CAPE MAY WARBLERS, TENNESSEE WARBLERS, BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS, BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, and WILSON’S WARBLERS were seen migrating during the past week. There were several WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, LINCOLN’S SPARROWS, and VESPER SPARROWS reported from scattered locations during the past week. A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Manchester on September 20th. RAPTOR migration is under way with migrating raptors being counted daily at the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough, including 11,494 raptors tallied since September 1st (with 2,812 counted just on September 22nd!) and at the Carter Hill Observatory in Concord, including 5,536 raptors counted since September 1st. Be sure to visit these New Hampshire Audubon staffed observatories this fall season to help out with the counts!
