I recently had my first experience with an immature barred owl and it was only with the help of friends and YouTube that I finally identified the strange sounds made by a creature on my night-darkened porch.  I was sitting in my living room late at night, the screen door open to the night sounds, when I heard the weirdest whistle outside the screen door.  It called half a dozen times, moved off a bit and repeated the procedure, coming nearer at one point so that it sounded right on the other side of the screen.

A little later there was a scrabbling noise and a swish on the porch floor, but when I looked nothing was there.

I live with a parrot, who spends some days in a cage on that porch.  Anyone who knows parrots knows that they are messy eaters and frequently throw food on the floor.  Of course, mice, chipmunks and squirrels love to clean up the mess.  This time a young owl obviously used this to capture a meal!
