Hey everyone!
Interested in nature? (duh). How about in writing? Interested in exploring the
Hood Museum before it closes for renovations in mid-March? Check out this really awesome writing workshop Professor Osborne (of the ENVS department) asked me to
pass along to all of you. Hopefully I'll see some of you there!

Plunging below the Surface of Eric Aho's Ice Cuts: A Writing Exploration
February 10th, 6:30 -8pm
Hood Museum
Contact Sharon L. Reed to sign up for the workshop.
Eric Aho's Ice Cuts exhibit presents images of holes he has cut into the
ice of a New Hampshire pond as part of his family's sauna ritual.
Of the ice-cut image Aho has said: "The ice is a veneer, like human skin
. . . . It's a protective layer, a scrim, something that we all employ to
get ourselves through the day, through our lives. And then at some point
you have to address it." And of viewers' reactions to the images, he
recognizes, "There are the people who say, "Oh, I want to dive into that!"
And then there are people who stand as far back as possible and say,
I'm not going anywhere near it,' as if it would swallow them up."
In this 90-minute viewing and writing journey, we will approach the
exhibit in a series of contemplative and exploratory exercises that will
start with our responses to the images and lead us to the stories we hold
about nature, place, family, and culture. By the time wešre done, we may
have a better sense not only of our complex relationship with the worlds
inside and outside of our own skin, but also of the protective layers we
wrap ourselves in, particularly during winter.
