Pileated seen flying toward Fairlee Town Forest, confirming the call I had heard there earlier in week. Just learned they are year-round residents. Rarely see them.

Feeders getting lots of titmice and white-breasted nuthatches this year, along with chickadees, bluejays, juncos, downy and hairy woodpeckers. Very few goldfinches and no siskins, redpolls, purple finches, red-breasted nuthatches, grosbeaks (yet). Interesting how these vary year to year. Last year had no titmice. Some years huge flocks of goldfinches. Wonder if these reflect natural cycles, location, climate, types or condition of feed (have lots of fresh nyjer seed out for finches), when feeders went out (late this year per late bear hibernation), or larger trends... I live at 950' overlooking Lake Morey at edge of large forest -- the raven/red squirrel zone. Never get crows, cardinals, or grey squirrels here but do get many raptors including bald eagles, occasional northern visitors like redpolls, and all New England's summer migrants.
