This position resides within the Center for Language & Technology (CLT), home to a vibrant, fast-paced technology environment that supports a wide array of instructional and research projects, some of which have national impact. Housed in the College of Languages, Linguistics & Literature (LLL), the CLT supports the informed use and integration of technology into LLL’s instruction and research. Under the Director of the CLT, this lead IT Specialist provides support for various CLT programs distributed throughout the college, helps identify college IT needs, makes recommendations for college, department, and lab support service strategies, manages the installation and maintenance of networks and servers and a college computer replacement program, supports CLT systems for online learning, conducts technology training, evaluates and implements new technologies, and actively participates in requests for sponsored funding.

Duties and Responsibilities

  *   Works under the direction of the CLT Director and serves as the lead IT Specialist in CLT to support the College of Languages, Linguistics & Literature.
  *   Consults with the CLT Director and staff in the evaluation of new technologies for long-range and strategic planning for the college IT needs.
  *   Creates a comprehensive information technology plan for the College, in coordination with the CLT Director and Chief Administrative Officer.
  *   Conduct needs assessments and makes recommendations for support service strategies for LLL departments and labs.
  *   Integrates research-based instructional technology.
  *   Evaluates user needs in light of available technologies to develop technical requirements for instructional applications.
  *   Develop training programs for faculty using instructional applications.
  *   Supports faculty use of CLT’s course management systems.
  *   Responsible for setup and maintenance of servers, workstations, hardware, software, and network infrastructure for the College of LLL.
  *   Writes documentation and user guidelines for the above.
  *   Manages the multiple network and server systems for the Center for Language & Technology (CLT) in the College of LLL.
  *   Oversees the installation and management of multiple network and server systems in the IT facilities supported by the College of LLL.
  *   Adapts and applies evolving networking, hardware, and software technologies to the CLT and College of LLL in response to the increase in technology use by faculty and students.
  *   Monitors network performance with appropriate hardware and software tools and diagnoses and resolves network problems as necessary.
  *   Advance procedures to accommodate contemporary agendas in computer-supported language learning.
  *   Manages the computer replacement program for LLL.
  *   Provides expert consultation on technical aspects of technology-based language learning, teaching & research; and on computer hardware and software for language research.
  *   Reconciles diverse viewpoints and needs of units in the College to determine policies for maintaining networks, servers, user labs, and technologies.
  *   Facilitates collaboration among educational bodies, e.g. Center for Language & Technology, National Foreign Language Resource Center, other institutions, and governmental bodies.
  *   Develops and maintains custom Web-based applications with database driven dynamic content.
  *   Oversee LLL-based projects to develop multimedia products and the development and maintenance of software in support of language learning, teaching, and research.
  *   Responsible for the overall design, implementation and technical support for College-wide database systems, including lab scheduling and courseware databases.
  *   Oversees the timely database and server backup and establishes restore procedures.
  *   Provides training and technical support for LLL faculty and staff in Web and multimedia related technologies.
  *   Design and develop training programs for non-technical administrators, faculty, and staff in the College of LLL in software and hardware use.
  *   Evaluates hardware and software for multimedia development and program applicability.
  *   Design and customize CLT networks, servers, and systems to meet the needs of LLL users for language learning, teaching and research.
  *   Monitors system performance and carries out, or supervises, timely fixes, updates and backups.
  *   Supervises a team of graduate students responsible for supporting the IT initiatives of the College of LLL.
  *   Advise faculty committees on IT-intensive hires, technical specs for research labs and online R & D projects.
  *   Participates in the conceptualization of technology projects in requests for sponsored funding and in the support of sponsored projects.
  *   Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  *   Possession of a pertinent baccalaureate educational degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or equivalent and 5 years of progressively responsible professional information technology experience with responsibilities for Multi-User System Administration and Networking, of which 2 years of the experience must have been comparable in scope and complexity to the next lower payband in the University of Hawai’i broadband system; or equivalent education/training or experience.
  *   Considerable working knowledge of multi user network administration and management as demonstrated by the broad knowledge and understanding of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving information technology concepts, principles and methodology.
  *   Considerable working knowledge and understanding of the broad technology, systems, hardware and software associated with multi user databases.
  *   Demonstrated ability to recognize a wide range of intricate problems, use reasoning and logic to determine accurate causes, and apply principles and practices to determine, evaluation, integrate, and implement practical and thorough solutions in an effective and timely manner.
  *   Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  *   Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  *   For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  *   Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  *   Considerable working knowledge of the internal hardware structure of Mac and Windows Servers.
  *   Considerable working knowledge of the operating system of Windows Servers and PCs and Mac OSX.
  *   Considerable working knowledge of Windows Active Directory and Domain management.
  *   Considerable working knowledge of LAN and WAN structure including cabling, hubs/switches, firewall/router, and TCP/IP.
  *   Familiarity with database driven dynamic web programming using server side code.
  *   Working knowledge of database design and maintenance, preferably on SQL Server.
  *   Ability to develop and articulate information technology plans for institutional units comprising diverse constituencies.
  *   Ability to prepare clear, detailed programs of computer instructions for efficient machine utilization.
  *   Ability to work a variable work schedule; and work outside normally scheduled work hours, including day, night, weekend and/or holiday hours as needed.
  *   Strong interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to work with a diverse team of faculty, students, and staff.
