Apropos George Clark's and Jeff McQueen's earlier reporting, similarly, some species counts were up today presumably because of the snow storm. We recorded 5" of somewhat heavy and crusted snow. Blue jays spiked from a previous high of 20 to 30+/-, American goldfinches went from a previous high of 18 to 21, and dark-eyed juncos increased from seven to nine. Interestingly, total number of species observed was below normal, just eight for the day as opposed to a typical average of ten. MIA? Downy woodpeckers and red-breasted nuthatches, usual visitors, were not tallied.
