Took my 5-year-old canoeing today. You don’t see too too many birds when a bright pink-wearing girl has a song stuck in her head. That said, we did see a gull-ish bird fly over, and it struck me as odd, as I’d never seen one over the Pompy. And maybe never one this big.

I got off a few shots at it. They’re distant 100 percent crops, so the pictures are not pretty; but hopefully good enough to identify.

I’m not great at bird ID in good circumstances, but I find gull-like birds sometimes indiscernable. I’m wondering if anyone here might give it a try. The bird appeared to be quite large, although the pictures won’t show that, as the background is just sky.

I looked up e-bird stats for the location and see that Chris Rimmer saw a ring billed gull about a month ago. Kent McFarland saw a herring gull back in 2004 and Stefan Sturup found a Bonaparte’s gull way back in 2001. That’s it for gulls on the flats.

Of the three, Herring gull - or at least a young one - could fit the bill. Maybe. I figured I’d put it to the group. -tig

PS: Also saw what I think was a red tail hawk getting chased by a couple crows.
