On vacation this week, today I birded from Orford to Woodsville, then down the Vermont side from Wells River to Fairlee. Some highlights:A Snow Goose flying with a small flock of Canada Geese over the cornfield just north of Reed's Marsh in Orford.
A Great Egret at Bedell Bridge State Park in Haverhill, here's a phone-scoped shot:
Unless there is a Gyr around here somewhere, I got all the falcons, in a pretty small area, too. An American Kestrel at Tullando Farm in Orford, a Peregrine Falcon at the Fairlee Palisades and two Merlins at the Lake Morey Resort. There was a female visible and vocalizing above the tennis courts in a pine and another responding somewhere out on the golf course.
Good diversity of waterfowl at the Waits River outlet at Depot Road, including Canada Geese, Mallards, Ring-necked Ducks, Hooded Mergansers, Wood Ducks, five Green-winged Teal and two Blue-winged Teal. A Pied-billed Grebe was also present. Great Day to be out! Jeff MacQueen, Orford
