Here on Beaver Meadow Road the last two weeks we've been seeing a few (1 -4) monarchs daily, along with small yellow butterflies and something that looks like a fritillary, but I don't really know many other butterflies to identify them very well.

We mowed half the meadow in mid July and the milkweed came up again and was full of tiny monarch caterpillars.  The rest of the meadow was mowed last week.  We heard the caterpillars liked tender young milkweed, and the mowing seemed to give them that all summer.

I've had daily monarch sightings on the home property over the last week. Granted it's usually only one, but at least I'm seeing them. Last year I saw none, a disheartening first. I've also seen one each time (4) I've visited The Chaffee Sanctuaryat Post Pond during the last couple of weeks.

The Lyme Conservation Commission decided not to mow The Chaffee this year, we do so every other year and should be mowing soon, to keep the milkweed up as long as possible.

Two monarchs found on Balch Hill yesterday (Tuesday, Sept. 9),  and Rebecca Spiegel spotted 4 monarchs in Etna today, 2 in the fields near the Etna Library at the Hayes Farm Park, and 2 in a field on Quail Dr.
