My wife and I were eating outside tonight to the singing of a scarlet tanager.  After about 45 minutes, a second bird very far off joined in.  Their songs kept getting closer until the first bird, a handsome male, landed at the top of a white pine.  After a few minutes, he flew back towards where he had come, but the second bird was now singing in practically the same spot.  When I found him, I was stunned.  He was a brilliant orange-red, probably double the brightness of the first male.  I can only think the first bird realized he was not the alpha male in this neighborhood.  What a gift to see these birds on such a beautiful day.
