Why did the American bittern cross the road? That's a good question. It was standing in plain view at the entrance of the Post Pond boat launch road as I drove by about noon today. When I turned around to go back for another look, the bird was in the process of walkinhg across Rt. 10 into a roadside wetland that has not yet re-vegetated from winter dormancy. Potentially not a good circumstance for this bird given Rt.10's high traffic volume. This is the exact same area where I last year photographed an American bittern standing in a puddle on a house's lawn.
