Film Events This Week:

Mon Apr 14, 6-7pm: Dartmouth Film Society Meeting (Wilson 205) The Dartmouth Film Society is a student organization that meets once a week to discuss the films playing at the Hopkins Center, debate important issues (like whether Ghostbusters is the best film of all time), write program notes, critique new movie trailers and vote on series proposals for future terms. You don’t have to be an expert—you just have to have an opinion!

Mon Apr 14, 7-8pm: Music Video Monday (Digital Lab, Black Family Visual Arts Center) Teams will compete to guess what the music video for a song would (should?) be. Bring a team of friends! Pizza included.

Tues Apr 15, 1-2pm: Illustrator Workshop: Using Image Trace (Digital Lab, Black Family Visual Arts Center) Learn how to use Illustrator to trace photographs and other artwork to create your own versions of originals. Space is limited, so email [log in to unmask] to sign up.

Thurs Apr 17, 6-8pm: Call Me Kuchu Screening and Panel Discussion (Filene Auditorium, Moore Hall) Call Me Kuchu is an award-winning 2012 American documentary directed by Malika Zouhali-Worrall and Katherine Fairfax Wright. The film explores the struggles of the LGBT community in Uganda, focusing in part on the 2011 murder of LGBT activist David Kato. A panel discussion will follow the screening. Panelists include Victor Mukasa, a Ugandan transgender activist; Judith Adong, an acclaimed Ugandan playwright and filmmaker; Jeff Sharlet, Assistant Professor of English at Dartmouth who has written about the American roots of Uganda’s anti-gay persecutions; and Melissa Minor Peters, whose dissertation is the only ethnography to date that focuses on LGBT people in Uganda. The panel will be moderated by Dartmouth Theater professor Laura Edmondson, whose work focuses on human rights, trauma and performance in East Africa.

Thurs Apr 17, 4-5:30pm: Non-Fiction Videomaking Workshop (Digital Lab, Black Family Visual Arts Center) Learn about making short non-fiction videos - we'll be going over the practical and technical aspects of video making and touring the resources available on campus. Fri Apr 18, 7pm: Interdisciplinary Poet and Sound Artist LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs (Bentley Theater, Hopkins Center) Diggs is an interdisciplinary poet and sound artist, combining digitally manipulated sound, spoken word, vocal improvisation and video in her performance. Using multiple languages, vernaculars, and code-switching, Diggs's work is an experimental investigation into language and the voice that makes hybrid and intertwining linguistic and cultural spaces visible. This event is sponsored by the Theater Department's VOICES program. Diggs will be reading excerpts from her 2013 poetry collection, TwERK (http://www.poetryfoundation.org/bio/latasha-n-diggs). 1. Culminating Experience Proposals for 14X and 14F: If you plan to do your culminating experience during Summer 2014 or Fall 2014, the deadline for submitting your proposal is May 15th. Students must have completed FS40 before submitting their proposal.

2. PRIDE Seeking Videographer: PRIDE is looking for a cinematographer/editor to create a short introductory video to open their annual fashion show, Transform. Those interested should contact Sandi Caalim ([log in to unmask]) immediately because the show is in two weeks!​

3. Physics Professor Seeking Videographer: Interested in the environment? Photography? Alaska? Prof. Tim Smith is working on a documentary Hydrokinetic Power for a Remote Alaskan Community. He is looking for a student to go this July to Igiugig, a remote village in Alaska, and document the installation of a turbine in it's river. Central to the project is recording the reaction of the local population to this turbine. The ideal candidate has in interest in several of the following: videography, energy & environment and remote communities. The candidate may be working independently for several weeks in Alaska. 4. Alexander Lang Memorial Award for the Best Original Screenplay by a Dartmouth Undergraduate: Professor Alexander Laing, was killed in a bicycle accident in 1978. Laing '25 was a poet, novelist and Professor of Belles Letters at the College. This award has been funded in recent years by friends of Film and Media Studies. The winner will receive a cash prize, which will be given at the Hopkins Center Award Ceremony in May. There are two categories. One for Feature scripts (~95-120 pages long), one for Short Scripts (~8 to 20 pages long). There may be more than one winner in each category. Primary consideration will be given to a subject's potential as effective movie material and how well the writer can convey that potential in a shootable script. All manuscripts must be typed and submitted in triplicate on three-hole punched paper, fastened with two or three brads. Name of writer should appear on the title page only. (The Film and Media Studies Department Office can supply a 3-hole punch and brads.) Submitted manuscripts must be received by Film Studies in a box for this purpose outside Cheryl Coutermarsh’s office in the Visual Arts Center by 4:00PM on Friday May 2, 2014. No late submissions will be accepted. Note that if you are off-campus, you may send in a .pdf file of your script to [log in to unmask] by that same deadline (he will not be a judge). (Note that ALL Dartmouth Undergraduates as well as those who graduated last spring are eligible. This is partly because most seniors were still writing their feature-length scripts when the deadline arrived.)

5. Stories Growing Films Seeking Production Designers: Stories Growing Films is looking for a Production Designer for the comedic short film it's producing this term, Monkey HouseThe Production Designer collaborates with the director on the overall visual look of the film. Responsibilities include scouting and selecting locations, decorating locations for scenes, and selecting props. It's an exciting hands-on position that combines design and film! 7. Ever wanted to visit Austin, TX? Want to have a blast this summer? Would you like a credit on a feature film before you graduate? Alex Stockton '15 is searching for cast and crew for a feature film entitled Illegal Invisible Ignited to be shot in Austin, TX this summer. Everyone will be fed and have a place to live. And you can bet it'll be the best summer you've ever had. The film's synopsis: Illegal Invisible Ignited tells the story of Franky DeLuna, a Hispanic who dreams of being an inventor but that was brought to the United States illegally when he was a little boy. He struggles to find his place in a country that requires him to not exist and is deported when he contacts the police in order to prevent a rape. As he tries to make a new home in Mexico, Franky discovers the corruption of the cartels and must decide whether it is better to live in a country where his life is in danger or a country that doesn't want him. Think 12 Years a Slave mixed with The Pursuit of Happyness but told through the salient issue of illegal immigration. If you are interested, please contact Alex ([log in to unmask]).

8. Seeking Wedding Videographer: My name is Megan Bourbeau. My fiancé and I are getting married in late September this year in southern New Hampshire and we are looking for a videographer for our wedding. We are looking for upperclassmen with experience in video, video editing, and working an important event for 7+ hours. It is important that they have their own equipment for that day, understand the time table of a wedding, and are able to edit the footage into a valuable keepsake for us.
