Overview* *This timely volume aims to publish new empirical research onlanguage learning in digitally-mediated environments and conceptualchapters that address new research approaches for effectivelyunderstanding the complex interactions taking place online. Thisdual focus distinguishes the volume from existing books in the fieldand is based on a recognition of the need for qualitative,multimodal and mixed methods research approaches that aim to capturea holistic understanding of learner interaction in online spaces.
According to advocates, social network sites and new learning spaceslike Coursera, Instreamia and other MOOCs are set to have anunprecedented impact on educational practice and affect the waysstudents engage with language and culture over the next decade. Thevolume will also examine the process of language acquisition inglobally networked learning environments and the role thatinternational interactions play in enriching the language learningexperience and perspectives of world cultures. Chapter authors willmake important contributions towards a better understanding of howinternational online interactions in online environments such associal networking sites can achieve proficiency goals and aidlearner interaction, intercultural understanding and digitalliteracy skills. Chapters are requested which explore how digitalenvironments provide learners with opportunities to:* *
* * Engage in meaningful conversations and exchange viewpointswith like-minded learners worldwide;** Compare one's own cultural reference with a multiplicity ofdifferent cultural perspectives of the target language and culture;** Connect with other disciplines through online courses thatoffer professional and academic courses in foreign languages;** Continue their study of the target language beyond theschool setting in multicultural online communities of practice.
In addition to discussing the potential contribution of MOOCs andsocial networks in terms of enriching the language-learningexperience and preparing students for global citizenship through thestudy of a foreign language, authors will address a multiplicity ofissues affecting language education at pedagogical and institutionallevels. At the pedagogical level, this volume will examineinstructional methods, learning strategies, student feedback, peerassessment and lifelong learning. At the institutional level, wewill investigate issues of teacher readiness, accreditation andarticulation.* *
The volume will have two parts,* *
* * with the first addressing new approaches to researchingonline CALL environments using digital technologies and applications** and the second providing examples of empirical research onlearner interaction online e.g., in social networking sites such asLivemocha, virtual worlds, telecollaboration, and online and blendedlanguage learning contexts.
In the first stage, abstracts of no more than 250-300 words arerequested on the following or related topics:* *

Potential authors are requested to submit an abstract of no morethan 300 words to the editors Ed Dixon and Michael Thomas. Authorsshould also submit an academic biography of no more than 150 wordsreview, successful authors will be invited to submit their fullpaper in line with the schedule given above.*
