This morning at 10 am, I went to let my dogs out on the deck where I have
my bird feeders hanging, and as soon as I opened the door, there was a
flurry of wings and confusion as 2 birds flew directly past me into the
house! I shouted at my dogs to stay away, before noting that the first
little bird at my foot trying to get back out the door (through the glass)
was a brightly colored Red-breasted Nuthatch. It looked like its wing might
be damaged, but flew out the crack in the door as I tried to catch it..
(yay) Out of the corner of my other eye, I thought the larger bird must be
a Mourning Dove, but when I moved over to see if I could corral that one
out the door also, saw that it was a GORGEOUS Northern Shrike! He/she did
bang into the window a little bit before making it's way out the door, but
seemed to fly off alright once finding the opening in the door. I hope
they are both OK.. But if the nuthatch ISN'T ok, I hope that the Shrike
finds him if I don't find him (to take him to VINS) first!!
