Opossum have been around here for awhile but seem to be expanding. I had one in front of my garage along with a skunk just before winter.

Approximately four years ago my Jack Russel Terrier with a food aggression brought an Opossum to me on Marton Road in Windsor and carried it into my car. I found myself with a 'Possum riding shotgun," and felt like I was in a country song. I dared not move the 'Possum for fear that the dog would kill it if the 'Possum moved, and I couldn't move the 'Possum from under a food-aggressive rescue JRT because he might bite more deeply into this, "food."  Is it,"playing 'possum," or is it dead? I was stumped and didn't want my dog to create 'Possum pot pie on my front seat or to injure the 'Possum if it were alive; what to do? I did it, the 'Possum was removed without incident, the 'Possum is gone and the story remains deep in my memory as one of many wild adventures on Marton Road in Windsor, VT. Michael.

They seem perfectly dead, exuding the odor of a dead body as well as going into a state of suspended animation. I remember one apparently dead in a Have-A-Heart trap which I dumped out and studied to make sure it was dead. The appearance of death was completely convincing to me, and I took my time. I went in the house, leaving the dead possum outside, but a while later it was gone!

My daughter, who is living in Wilder, called about a week ago to say that her dog ran across the street and killed an Opposum in the neighbor's yard, then brought it back to her house.  She didn't know who she should call to report a dead Possum, wondering that her dog had killed it because she "barely touched it".  We bought thought of the expression, Playing Possum, and when she went back out to check on the body, it was gone!  Maybe they are just moving into the area?

As I write this at 5:00 PM Friday, the 17th, an opossom is sniffing around at the bottom of the pole that holds my sunflower feeder.  I live in residential Hanover two blocks from the College gymnasium!

We have deer in our yard every night but this is a first!
