In the System Prefs, go to Security and Privacy and enable Anywhere under Allow Apps Downloaded From, and try again. If that doesn’t work, you may have to temporarily downgrade back to an earlier OS, as FMS 12 does not currently install on Mavericks; it’s possible it also won’t un-install. Dan, I don't think you can perform any useful comparison here. FileMaker Server's hosting model is quite different, as is their licensing model. Take a look at the FMS pricing in the FileMaker Store to get a sense of the costs just for licensing FMS (let alone all the other costs involved in hosting.
