Rachida, we use the Primasoft Organizer Pro (acquired in 2007, I think) with a scanner and purchased barcodes (most DVDs have barcodes already but some may not).

It works fine for our small collection (a few hundred items, plus instructor or library copies that come and go). Note that you have to set the system up to include the information you want to make available (which can be useful for sorting the database by language, owner, instructor), enter all the information for each item, and probably also enter information for each borrower (unless you can access some kind of university database). I actually did the initial data entry for the items, but now the lab assistants do it.

There does exist a databse program of this type which recognizes the barcodes of many popular DVDs and enters the information automatically when you scan the barcode. I’m not sure how broad its reach is, though. I can find out, as there is a larger film library upstairs that uses it.
