The 8th Annual Active Learning Institute, December 12^th and 13^th, 2013

The Active Learning Institute (ALI) helps faculty develop and refine skills for learner-centered course design and teaching. Discussions and activities focus on theories of learning, course and syllabus design, collaborative learning, peer assessment and educational technology for active learning.  ALI faculty design this two-day workshop around the challenges identified by each year's group of participants.  Professor Chris Jernstedt (PBS) will open the institute with a presentation on how people learn and how learning changes brains.

Participants in the 2013 ALI will receive a $500 stipend for full participation in the two-day institute. Anyone holding a faculty teaching appointment at Dartmouth (Arts and Sciences, Thayer, Tuck and Geisel) at any rank is eligible to apply. To apply for the institute, please submit the following as e-mail file attachments to DCAL at [log in to unmask] by November 1^st, 2013:

• A brief statement (800 words or less) of the specific teaching challenges you wish to address over the two-day institute. 
• Please identify the Dartmouth course you regularly teach or plan to teach in which these challenges arise and for which you plan to adopt new tools and technique
• The syllabus for course you want to re-design

ALI faculty read every application and select participants based on:     

• overall quality of your statement of challenges   
• how well the statement fits with our team's areas of expertise   
•  how the various statements complement each other and help us form a community of learning for the two-day institute

We strive to create a group for the event that is diverse in disciplines, schools and departments or programs.
