ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

THE COOPER INTERNATIONAL LEARNING CENTER


The Cooper International Learning Center (CILC) at Oberlin College seeks an Assistant Director to promote and support the use of technology in the teaching and learning of modern languages, literatures, and cultures. This is a full-time, 11-month Administrative and Professional Staff position reporting to the Director of the CILC. Responsibilities:  The Assistant Director works closely with the Director and approximately 40 language faculty, as well as affiliated staff and students to promote and support the use of technology in the teaching and learning of modern languages, literatures and culture. In this role, the Assistant Director will:

Consult with faculty to provide technical support and guidance in the development of instructional materials.

Proactively support existing software and apps (e.f. VoiceThread, Wordpress, SoundCloud, iMovie) for the teaching of foreign languages, literatures, and cultures.

Research new technologies and tools for potential adoption in the CILC, sharing this information regularly with the Director and other interested parties.

Oversee the scheduling, support, and maintenance of 24 Macintosh workstations.

Administer the CILC’s cloud-hosted web server, including installation and configuration of web-based services (placement tests, course blogs, usage tracker, etc.), and construction and maintenance of a reliable backup system.

Coordinate the CILC’s equipment-for-loan program, which makes various portable devices and equipment available for short-term loan to faculty and students.

Introduce and demonstrate CILC facilities, resources and equipment to mixed faculty-student groups.

Recruit, interview, train and supervise the work of approximately 8 student assistants.


Requirements:  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; minimum two years’ experience using and supporting applicable technologies in an academic environment; knowledge of a second modern language; experience using, troubleshooting, and supporting recent versions of OSX, Windows, iOS, and Android operating systems; experience in a web server administration, including comfort with a command prompt; excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, demonstrated commitment to a proactive support model, ability to work independently and as part of a team.


Desired Qualifications:  Experience leading small-group training sessions; active membership in a related professional organization; demonstrated skill in a current programming language; previous experience with MMORPGs and videogaming as a tool for learning.


Compensation:  Within the range established for this position, the annual salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Total compensation includes the opportunity to attend up to two professional conferences per year and an excellent benefit package.
