I experimented with my work FMP Advanced (v9), but it appears that on a Mac I can only create runtime for a Mac, and we don't have Advanced running on the work PCs. Maybe this has changed by version 12?

I will absolutely be buying my own copy of Advanced if ANY other client approaches me for work. This is not my 'day job', but it is an exciting sideline. I didn't seek out the work I'm doing now and I'm not in a position to market myself as a developer.

Thanks everyone for advice!

Emma, just checking: are you aware that FMP Advanced allows you to create a runtime solution that means your clients don't need a copy of FileMaker? (This works well as long as they don't have a shared database.)

Emma,

If your buying for the client,  I would think it is ok to develop for the client on your computer then transfer FileMaker and the database to the client when they go live.

The dilemma comes in when the next job for a different client comes along.  The copy of FileMaker on your PC is for  a different client....

I purchase a copy of Advanced licensed to me and use it for all of my work.  I have purchased software for clients,  but the cost is built into the project and it is only installed on the clients systems.  Most of the time I get the client purchase FileMaker and just advise on numbers of copies required.

The cost of my copy is a business expense and can be deducted.

Best of luck with your project.

I wish I wish I had the money lying about, but I don't. So I am going to buy Basic and install on my computer as the 'home' version for now. I will have to save up for the Advanced for myself in the not-too-distant future.

Final question: must I buy in the name of the company who will be the registered user? It's me buying at this stage, using my card. I'm guessing it's who you register as when you install that counts, not who you buy as?

Emma,

Richard has given you some excellent advice.  My 2 cents is that you should buy Advanced for your use now!  It will pay for itself the first time you have to debug a script and need to use the debugger and data view to determine why something isn't working as intended.    These two features can save you hours of work.    When the next project comes along,  you will be all set to go with out trying to determine if this is the project you need to justify the expense of Advanced.

Good luck with your project.

Absolutely true. I know when I write them at work I get so frustrated when someone will eventually say 'Well, it would be good if it did such and such another way, but we've got a workaround'. I always tell them, give me feedback, tell me what wants fixing. It's like they're too polite! For this one I've agreed a price for delivered product and will re-quote for enhancements.

If I could only get enough work, this would be a great business op. I've taught myself Filemaker as a sideline to my 'official' post, typesetter/artworker. So most of my databases are to do with text/image management, and pretty complex. This one's a doddle by comparison!

Thanks so much Richard for all the helpful advice. So far I'm not anticipating packing in my day job! This is just a one-off. But I have realised that I've advised them to buy standard, and of course I'm really going to need Advanced. Which costs CONSIDERABLY more than this job will earn me. Of course if I was doing lots of it that would be fine. This one is so simple it really won't need Advanced - or is that famous last words? - so maybe for now I can use the single copy to maintain their database. If any more comes my way, I'll have to bite the bullet and buy myself Advanced.

One more final bit of advice:

There is no such thing as a finished database. Every one is a work in progress.
