Dania had a great idea for having students read stories using technology. There are even children's books available free from Nook, Google Books, etc and if you have iPads, there are apps for them. You didn't mention which language you were looking to use them with so I am not sure what all might be available in the target language.

Another idea is to have students create stories themselves. I know an approach being taken in some Kindergarten L1 classes is to have students start writing stories and just write in the letters that they can discern from the sounds of the sentences. The teacher then fills in the other sounds. This could work in an L2 as well especially in an immersive environment. One resource that I love is http://storybird.com/ . This idea would work even with some basic vocabulary and knowledge of the alphabet and its sounds.
